FLAMINGO

Kin Essence – I serve with my love, affection and attention
Flamingoes are very social birds, living in colonies whose populations can number in the thousands. They congregate together not only to feed together and pair up for mating, but also to find safety from predators. Once their babies are just a few weeks old, they coordinate a kind of child-care group so that most of the adults can wander further to feed and provide more food for their growing chicks. Flamingoes will travel long distances and migrate to find abundant sources of food and are usually found in the same areas year after year.
Tradition is important to the flamingo. When courting they perform synchronised displays like learnt and rehearsed dances to each other to attract a mate. Flamingos are born with pale grey feathers, and it is through constant consumption of particular foods in their diet – namely crustaceans like shrimp and other plants and algae rich in beta carotene that then sees this pigment processed into fat and then deposited through to new feather growth, resulting in a full set of pink tone feathers.
Pink is a colour that represents love, compassion and nurturing – which is the core of what drives these beautiful birds in life. Through their physical and behavioural attributes, these water birds teach us connect with our community, ask for help if we need it and offer the gift of our time and service to the people we love. The flamingo reminds us of the importance of our community – and to remember that no experience is ever quite as potent without the ability to share it with those we love. Happiness is better shared with others. Our community is a direct reflection of how we see ourselves.
